Stadium History

Built in 1923 Maine Road was the home of Manchester City FC for 80 years until 2003 when the club moved to the City of Manchester Stadium which currently known for sponsorship reasons as Etihad Stadium.The first match at Maine Road took place on the 25th of August when Manchester City defeated Sheffield United 3-1 and it first renovation came in 1931 when the corner between the Main Satnd and Platt Lane was rebuilt in order to incorporate a roof.Another change at Platt Lane came in 1935 which extended terracing and provided a roof for the full stand,with that the capacity of Maine Road reaced 88000.A year earlier in March 1934 the 2nd highest attendance at an English football match at a club ground was recorded when Manchester City played against Stoke City in front of 84000 fans.In the first years after WWII (1939-1945) City’s neighbour and rival Manchester United played some of the matches since Old Trafford has been damaged by German bombardment of Manchester during the Manchester Blitz,another high attendance was recorded in January 1948 when Manchester United played against Arsenal in front of 83000 fans which to this stands as a national record for a league game.In 1953 floodlights were installed while 10 years later,in 1963 benches were installed at the Platt Lane end.In the 1970s the North Stand was constructed,after the Taylor Report after the Hillsborough Disaster,the Kippax Stand was rebuilt,but after City suffered two consecutive relegations on 1998 and 1999 which the club found itself in Division One (3rd tier) any further redevelopment was stopped.After City returned to the Premier League in 2000 and the city of Manchester build the City of Manchester Stadium for the Commonwealth Games,the future of Maine Road was sealed by the closure of the stadium and its demolishment.On the 11th of May 2003 Manchester City played its final match on Maine Road against Southampton in front of 34000 fans which City lost by a single goal.After Manchester City moved to the City of Manchester Stadium,Maine Road was demolished in 2004 and its final capacity stood at 35000 seats.
