Founded on Christmas Eve in 1911 when a group of dissatisfied players from Fluminense (Flamengo’s rival which they contest the Fla-Flu derby) broke away from the club due to a dispute with the board,Flamengo is one Brazil’s most successful football clubs and one of the five football clubs in the Brazilian Serie A (top division) who has never been relegated. But the formation of Flamengo dates back to the 17th of November 1895 as a rowing club. However it is known as one of the most successful clubs in Brazil with 33 Campeonato Carioca titles,3 Copa Do Brasil cups,5 Serie A titles, a Copa Libertadores and a FIFA Intercontinental Cup triumph in 1981.It’s first club legend was Leonidas Da Silva which was the leading goal scorer of the 1938 FIFA World Cup in France and during his time with the club which was between 1936 and 1942 he made 149 appearences and scored 153 goals. But by far the biggest club legend was the White Pele-Arthur Antunes Coimbra or better known as Zico where during his time with the club which was between 1971 and 1983 he made 212 appearences and scored 123 goals before he left Flamengo for the Italians of Udinese only to make a return to Flamengo between 1985 and 1989 when his career came to an end.But during Zico’s period especially in the late 1970s and early 1980s the club had its own Golden Era which included 3 Serie A titles (1980,1982,1983),a Copa Libertadores title where they won by beating the Chileans of Cobreloa in three matches and later they won the FIFA Intercontinental Cup by beating Liverpool 3-0 which was more than enough to crown them World Champions from Brazil since Pele’s Santos. However after 1983 and Zico’s departure from club were much successful, besides that in 1992 they won their 4th Serie A title in the mid-to-late 1990s and in the beginning of the 2000s the club was ina state of crisis and somehow avoided relegation to the lower Serie B.In the mid-to-late 2000s Flamengo recovered and won its 5th Serie title in 2009.But it is the red-black hooped shirt of the late 1970s and early 1980s which became the symbol of Brazilian club football in that era which made it one of the most famous Legendary Shirts of Brazil and South America with Zico wearing it.
