The overachievers of the 2015-16 season

The 2015-16 season gave us many surprising results in the football world which remids us why football is called the beautiful game and the romance, faith and optimism which football still has besides the big money spending owners who have more or less ruined the game of football, but this was the year of many surprises and overachievers who have shown that money isn’t the necessary thing to achieve a success. So here they are:

1.Leicester City

The fairytale story which amazed the football world is truly a story for a Hollywood film which can be described in superlative words.Nobody in their wildest dreams and imaginations could imagine that a club whose odds were 5000-1 to win the Premier League under Claudio Ranieri whose last job with the Greek National Team when he was fired after the defeat by the Faroe Islands. But Leicester defied the odds and played football with passion and ended writing one of the most beautiful football stories which will be in history books.

2.US Sassuolo

Italy’s football fairytale story of the 2015-16 season was founded in 1920 and spent most of its time in lower divisions of Italian football until 2008 when it achieved promotion to Serie B under current Juventus coach Massimilliano Allegri who coached Sassuolo for a single season.Five years later Sassuolo was promoted for the first time in its history to the Serie A.While in its first season in the Serie A escaped relegation by being 17th and only two points above Catania,in the next season it finished in a decent 12th place. But the 2015-16 season it was beyond any expectations and scored huge victories against Juventus (1-0) twice against Inter (3-1 and 1-0),Milan (2-0) and had a very strong end of the season where in the last five matches collected 13 of possible 15 points and finished in a fantastic 6th place and thanks to the triumph of Juventus in the Coppa Italia,Sassuolo will play next season in Europe.

Southampton finished in 6th place in the EPL in the 2015-16 season and its rise in the Premier League is similar to Leicester City but with a difference with returning a season before Leicester City in the Premier League while spending two seasons in the Division One unlike Leicester City who spent a single season.Nevertheless since the 2010-11 season when it was promoted from Division One to the Championship the club from the South Coast is on the rise and for a sixth consecutive season it has rose to the table and played good football which under Ronald Koeman resulted in even better results. In the last five matches of the season they collected 13 of 15 points and in three of those matches have scored four goals against the opposing team which included a 4-2 trouncing against Manchester City. With 63 points and a 6th place which is their best finish in more than 30 years,Southampton is the club to watch in the next years.

4.FC Crotone

Not known abroad as it is in Italy but for the first time since its founding in 1910 the little club from Southern Italy will play in the Serie A next season besides that like Sassuolo spent most of its history playing in lower divisions and only in 2000 was promoted to Serie B,but in the years that followed it bounced back between the Serie B and lower divisions until 2009 when the club stabilized and became a fixture in the Serie B.However in the 2014-15 season Crotone barely avoided the relegation playoffs by a point and survival in the Serie B was also a crucial target this season, but under Ivan Juric who was hired in the beginning of the season,Crotone has done the impossible and made it to the Serie A for the first time in its history which is the club’s biggest achievement ever made.

5.FC Rostov

FC Rostov plays in the Russian Premier League since 2009 and in the last 20 years it was a mid-to-lower table club with two relegations and instant promotions while its highest position in the Russian Premier League was a 6th place in the 1998 season and two seasons ago won its first Russian Cup,but this season under coach Kurban Berdyev who coached Rubin Kazan for 12 seasons, the club wrote its own fairytale besides having huge financial problems and battled with CSKA Moscow for the RPL title to the very last day of the season but unlike Leicester City,Rostov finished 2nd by just 2 points behind the Army club.Nevertheless Rostov beat Dinamo and Lokomotiv Moscow twice (1-0 and 1-3;0-2 and 2-1),Zenit (3-0),Spartak Moscow (2-0),CSKA Moscow (2-0) and Zenit (3-0) and made its highest finish of clubs history as vice-champions of Russia in the 2015-16 season.
