Legendary Shirts:Fort Lauderdale Strikers


The North American Soccer League which ran in the 1970s had many cult clubs,from the Portland Timbers,Seattle Sounders and the LA Aztecs in the West,Vancouver Whitecaps in Canada,the Chicago Sting and the Minnesota Kickers in the Midwest and the New York Cosmos being the glamour team with winning championships.But everybody overlooks Florida and its impact in the NASL during that era,besides the Tampa Bay Rowdies and the less successful Miami Gatos/Toros,just northern of Miami there is Fort Laurderdale and its soccer team the Fort Lauderdale Strikers.There in 1977 the Miami Toros moved and became the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in which they debuted in red-yellow hooped shirts which became another iconic kit of the 1970s NASL era.The Strikers in their roster had one of the biggest names in World Football in that era with Peruvian striker Teofilo Cubillas,German bomber Gerd Muller,Northern Irish star George Best and English goalkeeper Gordon Banks.Brsides the club lasted only until 1983 when they moved to Minnesota,they made an impact with making the playoffs until they moved to the Upper Midwest with a run to the NASL Soccer Bowl in 1980 when they were defeated by the Cosmos,but they developed a rivalry with the Rowdies which with the rebirth of NASL continues to this day and with that the iconic red-yellow hoops are back for a new generation of Strikers who can make an impact.
