Legendary Shirts:New York Cosmos


One of the most iconic and legendary shirts in world football from the 1970s comes from the USA and it is the legendary shirt of the New York Cosmos.The mid-to-late 1970s were the golden era of soccer in the USA and NASL which in the time was the premier football league had the NY Cosmos which were one of the first billion dollar teams.While the city of New York in the late in crisis in the late 1970s with the Summer of Sam murders,riots in the streets and bankrupcy of the city,the Cosmos with Pele,Beckenbauer and Chinaglia went to conquer the NASL.During the NASL era the Cosmos won a record of five titles (1972,1977,1978,1980,1982) and initiated the soccer boom in the USA by signing foreign stars like Pele,Beckenbauer,Chinaglia,Carlos Alberto and domestic stars like Randy Horton,Werner Roth and Shep Messing.That time the Cosmos reached the height of their success and were the glitz and glamour of the NASL besides that in 1977 after their victory in the Soccer Bowl final against the Portland Timbers,Pele retired from football but the foundation for the Cosmos was set and they continued to dominate the NASL until its demise in 1985 when the last time they won the title.The rise and fall of the New York Cosmos was tied with the NASL,from obscure beginnings in the late 1960 and early 1970s to the boom era in the mid-to-late 1970s and its final demise in 1985.The New York Cosmos were one of the teams of the 1970s and had one of the most legendary shirts in world football which is a collectors must have when it comes to the 1970s shirts.The NASL was relaunched in 2009 as a second division league,the Cosmos were relaunched just a year later which brought back the all-white shirt with green sleeves which Pele,Beckenbauer and Chinaglia wore and a new generation of the Cosmos has just started to return the Cosmos to the days of glory.
