The qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia in the South American zone are going to be very messy until the very end since there is a real possibility that one of the big Sotuh American teams might miss the World Cup in two year time. There are seven more matchdays in the South American qualification zone and for some teams things aren’t going so well. After the disaster in the Copa America where they couldn’t pass the group stage,Brazil has turned the tables with the firing of Carlos Dunga and the hiring of former Corinthians coach Adenor Leonardo Bacchi better known as Tite under whose mandate the Selecao returned to winning ways and in the last four matches the Selecao collected 12 points which sent them into first place of the qualifying group after a disastrous beginning of the qualifiers which saw them collect only 9 points in their first 6 matches. But the disaster in the Copa America which the centenary edition was held in the USa has shaken the Selecao and Dunga was fired from the job,Tite returned the discipline in the team and the Selecao began to win again, but the real test for the Selecao comes next week when its biggest rival and currently in danger missing the World Cup Argentina is coming to Belo Horizonte for a crucial qualifying match since the Argentinians are in 6th place which means they are out of the necessary automatic and playoff spot for the World Cup.Following Brazil on the table is Uruguay which are a point behind the Selecao and are led in the attack by Cavani who is currenty the top scorer of the South American qualifications and Barcelona’s striker and one of the members of the MSN trio Luis Suarez who is also the all-time topscorer of the La Celeste with 47 goals,so far in the qualifiers Suarez scored only 3 goals which is surprising since he is one of the most active strikers the La Liga, but in Suarez’s goal absence Cavani and the rest of the team stepped up and the La Celeste is currently 2nd and it is looking to make a third consecutive World Cup appearance. The two countries on the Pacific which are Equador and Colombia sit at 3rd and 4th place of the qualifying group, especially problematic has become the situation for Equador which after a dream start in the qualifiers which saw a 2-0 victory at matchday 1 against Argentina in Buenos Aires and collecting three victories and a draw after that the La Tricolor suffered three defeats in a row from matchday 6 to matchday 8,but somehow rebounded in the qualifiers in October with a huge 3-0 victory over the Copa America champions which is Chile and a 2-2 draw with Bolivia which had to be an easy match for the La Tricolor since Bolivia is one of the weakest teams in the qualifying group and it has only collected 4 points in the whole of qualifiers.Ecuador’s neighbor to the north which is Colombia is in 4th place and it will fight to the bitter end for an automatic qualifying spot, after the return at the 2014 FIFA World World Cup in Brazil where the Cafeteros made it to the quarterfinals of the tournament find themselves today at the 4th place which is the last automatic qualification spot. Now come the most biggest dissapointments of the South American qualifiers-Argentina and Chile, especially the situation for the La Albiceleste is alarming,in the wake of the loss in the final of the Copa America in the USA,Leo Messi left the Seleccion and numerous problems were discovered in the Argentinian Football Association which is on the verge on bankrupcy which left most of the staff unpaid has reflected on the results of the La Albiceleste which has one of the most strongest squads in decades and two years ago was in the final in Rio against Germany, has imploded in the qualifiers.Last autumn when the qualifiers started the La Albiceleste had one of the worst starts with defeats from Uruguay and Ecuador and draws from Paraguay and Brazil, only to score four consecutive victories in the next four matchdays until another series of 2-2 draws against the weakest teams in the group which are Peru and Venezuela before a defeat against Paraguay in Cordoba. The situation in Buenos Aires is serious enough that currently the number one ranked team in the FIFA World Rankings might miss their first World Cup since the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico where the La Albiceleste didn’t qualified,it would be unthinkable a World Cup without Leo Messi which has less and less chances to win the trophy which is missing in his trophy collection. But the crucial qualifiers are coming for the La Albiceleste with a grudge match against Brazil in Belo Horizonte and at home against Colombia.Meanwhile the current Copa America champion which is Chile which came out of the shadow of the more successful neighbor is trying to knockout Colombia from the automatic qualifying spot and ensure a third consecutive World Cup appearance. If Chile makes it to the World Cup in Russia they hope to make a huge splash and prove to the World that it wasn’t a coincidence that they are back-to-back Copa America champions.Outside the top six the only team which could pull a surprise is Paraguay.La Albiroja hasn’t seen the World Cup since South Africa, but they have become a landmine for teams from the upper places in the table. In the next matches Francisco Arce’s men are going to play Peru at home and make a trip to La Paz to face Bolivia which are with Venezuela the weakest teams in the qualifiers but also, both Peru and Bolivia can give headaches to the La Albiroja and if Argentina makes slumps combined with the triumphs of the La Albiroja they might do the unthinkable and compete for a playoff spot in the Intercontinental qualifiers.Prepare for turbulence in the South American qualifiers because it will be a rollercoaster ride with twists and turns and unexpected results which might eleminate one of the best teams in South America.
