The threeway title race in Ligue 1

FOOTBALL : Nice vs Monaco - Ligue 1 - 20/02/2015

Is there any football league in Europe which has the most exciting title race this season it is the French Ligue 1 where three clubs are competing for the title and there are no rooms to make fatal errors.Unlike previous season where in this time of the year Paris Saint-Germain was on the way to win the title without any significant competition, this season it is way more different since Nice and Monaco are participating in the title race and both clubs are switching between the 1st and 2nd place on the league table and the Parisians are in third watch with each round how the title defense is slipping away from their hands.Let’s start with the club from the principality and the current leader of the Ligue 1 table which is AS Monaco.Russian billionaire Dimitry Rybolovlev since he took over the club in 2011 has spent a ton of money to make Monaco competitive and this might be the year when finally all his investments are being repaid, the red-whites have finally took over the lead of Ligue 1 from Nice and they have a two-point advantage in front of them. Also they are destroying defences in Ligue 1 very impressively,in early December the red-whites from the principality destroyed Bastia 5-0 with Radamel Falcao scoring two goals, after that they trounced Bordeux 4-0 with Falcao scoring a hattrick in the match, only to be defeated by Olympique Lyon 3-1 at home a week before Christmas, but thanks to a number of draws by Nice, the red-whites climbed to 1st place coupled with a series of high scoring victories 4-1 and 4-0 trouncings of Olympique Marseille and Lorient, besides Falcao scored only a single goal, but it didn’t matter. While Falcao was absent in goalscoring the rest of the team stepped up  especially the midfielder duo of Bernardo Silva and Boschilla and Falcao’s attacking partner Valere Germain who in the recent matchday against Lorient scored two goals.Leonardo Jardim’s team is proving through the whole season they are a very serious challenger for the Ligue 1,something which Monaco didn’t won for 17 long years when the last time the title came to the principality. In the two following matchdays which feature matches against direct title rivals PSG and Nice, the red-whites have a chance to distance themselves from both clubs and make an unstoppable run to the Ligue 1 title. While the things in the principality are perfect, their southern neighbours on the Cote D’Azur which are the red-blacks of Nice aren’t so happy currently.Besides being the biggest sensation in the season, the momentum for Mario Balotelli and the rest has slown down.Nice just lost the lead in the title race thanks to three consecutive draws in the last five matches, besides they have only suffered a single defeat in the whole season, they have ranked in total seven draws, including two draws against low-ranking Metz and Bastia where they lost precious points for the title race and a 2-2 draw against PSG two weeks before Christmas where the red-blacks had a 2-0 advantage at half-time before Edison Cavani in the 2nd half of the match has scored two goals to make a 2-2 in the end.Something which Nice should definetly work is to win matches again and not let Monaco to get away with the title race.In the next matchday this weekend the red-blacks are going to play against another sensation of the season which is Guingamp which is currently 5th before the direct clash with Monaco which will probably decide the course of the rest of the season, the red-blacks of Lucien Favre need to step up their game and reclaim the 1st position on the table in order to prevent Monaco’s possible unstoppable run to the Ligue 1 title,a title which Nice is waiting for 58 years and this is probably their best chance to get to the days of old glory.Meanwhile in Paris, the situation isn’t rosy,Unai Emery’s men are 3rd and this season is a far cry from previous seasons where the Parisians were the most dominant side in Ligue 1.Still the Parisians are in hunt to defend the Ligue 1 title as well as the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue which also the Parisians are targeting to win, while in the Champions League in the 2nd round in March they are facing FC Barcelona so barring a miracle to happen, the Parisians will be mostly focused in domestic competitions to win. This season wasn’t good for the Parisians,in December they suffered a setback when in three consecutive matchdays have only collected a single point which was a 2-2 draw against Nice.Days before Christmas they demolished 5-0 Lorient and that victory brought calm in Paris, the question is for how long?Besides they won their last two matches, the Parisians this weekend are facing Monaco for a direct title clash and anything but a victory against the red-whites will doom their title defense and probably will leave them emptyhanded for the first time in four seasons when they began their dominance in Ligue 1.The next two matchdays in Ligue 1 will feature two direct title clashes where Monaco will play against both PSG and Nice and with that will probably give us an early answer to a new crowned Ligue 1 champion or the title race with extented further into the following months. So the passion and the excitement will not be missed, hopefully we are going to see a title race to the season finish in May.
