The 2.Bundesliga is entering in the last 11 matchdays of the 2016-17 season which will decide which two clubs will automatically gain promotion into the Bundesliga and with a third-placed team playing a promotion/relegation match against the 16th placed team of the Bundesliga. And in the last 11 matchdays there are five candidates for promotion to the Bundesliga starting with the leader of the 2.Bundesliga which is VFB Stuttgart.Last season the Schwaben were relegated from the Bundesliga for the first time in 41 years, but they are poised for a quick return to the Bundesliga.Hannes Wolf’s team are currently leading the 2.Bundesliga table with 47 points and in the last 6 matches, the Schwaben have collected 16 out of 18 points which included tricky 2-1 victories against Heidenheim and Sandhausen while in the big match on Monday evening against another promotion candidate which is Eintracht Braunschweig the Swabians earned a 1-1 draw,on Saturday the Schwaben are meeting with Bochum which only 12th on the table and it should be three easy points for the Schwaben which should provide a calm journey for a quick return to the Bundesliga. However the season’s biggest surprise is Union Berlin. The Eiserne never played in the Bundesliga in their history and duirng the DDR their biggest success was winning the East German Cup in 1968,after years of midtable mediocrity for the club from East Berlin, this might be the season when they get promoted to the Bundesliga and the first side from East Berlin to achieve this historical feat. The Eiserne are currently 2nd on the table and on course to reach the promised land of the Bundesliga and they are on fire.In the last 7 matches the Eiserne have collected 17 out of 21 points and they are unbeaten since mid-December that includes a string of victories in the last four matches.First against the sides from the bottom of the tables which are Karlsruher SC and Arminia Bielefeld and then double victories against the Bavarian sides of Wurzburger Kickers and 1860 Munich. This Sunday the Eiserne are going to Hamburg to face St.Pauli which like the Eiserne are on fire and are successfully collecting points to avoid relegation into the 3.Liga.So it should be interesting to watch the derby match between the two cult clubs which are fighting for opposite goals and if the Eiserne achieve promotion next year for the first time a real West-East Berlin derby will be played in the Bundesliga between Hertha Berlin and Union Berlin.Next for promotion is Hannover 96 which currently 3rd and currently is in a crisis of results of recently. The Reds had a run from the end of October to the end of January and were poised to take the 2nd automatic promotion spot but a recent slump of results combined with the rise of Union Berlin have put the Reds into 3rd place which for now means a promotion/relegation match with the 16th placed in the Bundesliga.Their bitter rivals which are Eintracht Braunschweig are trailing them by only a point and sit in 4th place, nevertheless the Lions have been promotion candidates since their relegation from the Bundesliga in 2014,however this season the Lions have been playing good and they are counting to make a breakthrough into one of the promotion places.Outside the four promotion candidates which are VFB Stuttgart,Union Berlin,Hannover 96 and Eintracht Braunschweig which the difference between them is only 6 points, the only club which has some chances to spoil them is Dynamo Dresden. The last time Dynamo Dresden played in the Bundesliga was in 1995 when they were relegated and from that point they have been jumping between the 2nd and 3rd leagues of German football however this season has been pretty good for Dynamo since they hold the 5th place and are trailing by seven points and barring a miracle to happen in the next 11 matchdays they might be in play for the promotion in the Bundesliga which they didn’t play in 22 years. If they can’t make it to the at least 3rd place they can use the surprising 5th place as a foundation for the following seasons where they can become a real promotion contendor.Anyway there are 11 matchdays till the end of the 2.Bundesliga and it should be interesting to watch who is going to clinch the 2 automatic promotion spots and who is going to play in the promotion/relegation match.
