Legendary shirts:Soviet Union


One of the most legendary shirts among national teams during the Cold War comes from one of the two Cold War superpowers and that is the Soviet Union.With the national team founded in 1923 the Red Army had very few success in its history,mostly their golden era was in the 1960s when they won their first and only European Championships in 1960 in the inaugural European Championship by beating Yugoslavia in the final in extra-times and made another final appearance in 1964 when the La Furia Roja beat them 2-1 in one of the most politically charged matches since Spain was under the rule of Francisco Franco and then came the 1966 FIFA World Cup in England where the Red Army achieved its best result ever-4th place which thier only significant result at the FIFA World Cups besides they made four more World Cup appearances (1970,1982,1986 and 1990),but they weren’t as close as in 1966 when led by the legendary goalkeeper Lev Yashin won their group which consisted of North Korea,Italy and Chile.After defeating Hungary in the quarterfinals,they faced West Germany led by Franz Beckenbauet who scocred the second goalin the match and with that the Red Army founded itself in the third-place match against Portugal led by another legend of world football-Eusebio and again lost.Nevertheless their 4th place was a huge success compared to the following World Cup appearances.In the following decades until the demise of the country in 1991,the Red Army made two more finals of the European Championships-1972 and 1988 where in both occasions they were defeated by West Germany and the Netherlands,but they scored medals at the Olympic football tournaments-two gold medals in the 1956 and 1988 Olympics when they beat in the gold medal matches Yugoslavia and Brazil and three consecutive bronze medals from 1972 to the 1980 Olympics at their own soil in Moscow where they beat East Germany,Brazil and Yugoslavia.The Red Army made one more appearance at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy which was their last ever appearance in a major football tournament with the friendly with Cyprus in November 1991 as the last international match ever.Nevertheless the red shirt of the Red Army has become a must have for collectors across the World since represented one of the superpowers in a time when football was more than a game it was politics on the field in an ideological war between East and West.
