An All-London Title Race

We are on the final stretch of the Premier League season and all of a sudden we have a title race between Chelsea and Tottenham.I wrote earlier when Chelsea had a massive 10 point advantage over their competitors and I mentioned it was Chelsea’s title to lose, given their recent loss against Manchester United, the title race between the Blues and the Spurs is on with the Blues having a 4 point advantage.Obviously the hiring of Antonio Conte and some minor adjustments in the roster where they brought in Ngolo Kante and Michy Batshuayi has turned the fortunes of the Blues after a catastrophic last season when they finished a mere 10th which was their worst ever table position in two decades. After a slump start where the Blues suffered two consecutive defeats against Arsenal and Liverpool, the Blues would go unbeaten for 13 matches (from early October to early January) where they racked up victories against Manchester United (4-0),Everton (5-0),Manchester City (1-3) and against the Spurs at Stamford Bridge at the end of November (2-1) where they continued their unbeaten streak against the Spurs at Stamford Bridge where the Spurs didn’t won since February 1990,however it would be the Spurs which would end their winning streak in early January where thanks to goals by Delle Alli the Spurs won the match against Chelsea 2-0 at White Hart Lane.On the other side the Spurs haven’t had such a streak like Chelsea during the whole season, but they have a large number of draws-8 which puts them on pair with West Bromwich Albion and recently the Spurs have begun to build a winning run after their 2-0 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield in mid-February and since then the Spurs have won seven of their matches they played and next Wednesday they are traveling to South London to face Crystal Palace which is fighting for its survival in the Premier League, but the most crucial match of the season for the Spurs comes in two weeks when they face their North London rivals-the Gunners which have completely detoriated this season and the Spurs might capitalize on their slump and claim the title of North London’s best club and finally to get out of Arsenal’s shadow where they have been for so many years. However this week comes the FA Cup semifinal and both the Blues and the Spurs face each other for a place in the FA Cup final,a victory of the Blues would give them the needed peace and self-confidence which has slumped a bit after the defeat against the Red Devils, while a Spurs victory would begin to cast a shadow to Chelsea’s title ambitions. Both clubs have a lot of history against each other beginning in the 1967 FA Cup final when the Spurs won the FA Cup by beating the Blues 2-1 in the first all-London FA Cup final. The rivarly between the two clubs was born but remained largely in the shadow due to the presence of Arsenal since both clubs consider the Gunners their biggest rival:the Spurs due to geography (both the Spurs and the Gunners are based in North London) and the Blues due to name recognition and by far both are the biggest clubs in London. However both Chelsea and Spurs have a lot of history and the recent chapter was written last season when at the beginning of May the Spurs and the Blues played one of the most crucial matches of the Premier League which went into history books. The 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge thanks to Eden Hazard’s goal in the final minutes of the match automatically gave Leicester City their first Premier League title and for the Spurs another season without a title which are waiting for the last 56 years. This Saturday another chapter in the Blues-Spurs rivalry will be written when both clash in the semifinal of the FA Cup which would determine a place in the final next month either against the Gunners or the Sky Blues of Manchester City. The stakes couldn’t be higher for the Blues which can win a double crown this season and only the Spurs are standing in their way which are looking to at least end their trophy drought which lasts for the last nine years. But for sure it awaits us a thrilling end to the Premier League season which both clubs can win or lose at the end,for the Blues the most critical thing is to avoid a late season collapse after they worked hard to return to the top of the Premier League while the Spurs will try to keep up the pace with the Blues and count on surprising upsets where they can sneak in and bring the title to North London. The Premier League title this season is moving from the Midlands to London, but the question is who will be?North or West London? Will the Spurs lift their first title in 56 years or it will be the Blues sixth title? That answer might come soon.
